Covid 19 vaccine 2023 bivalent Pfizer Ba45 available
The Pfizer bivalent BA.4/5 vaccine has been granted provisional approval by the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia on January 20th, 2023, as a COVID-19 booster vaccine for individuals aged 12 years and above.
Two immunogenicity studies by Pfizer compared the neutralizing antibody levels in adolescents and adults aged 12 years or older who had received a primary series and first booster of the Pfizer original vaccine. The studies examined the effects of a second booster of either the Pfizer bivalent BA.4/5 vaccine or the Pfizer original vaccine. Adults over 55 years of age who received the Pfizer bivalent BA.4/5 vaccine showed higher neutralizing antibody titres against the Omicron subvariant BA.4/5 (with a geometric mean ratio of 2.91 and 95% confidence interval between 2.45 and 3.44) than those who received the Pfizer original vaccine. Furthermore, the neutralization against newer BQ.1.1 and XBB.1 subvariants was also higher than with the original vaccine. While the bivalent vaccine had non-inferior and slightly higher titres for the ancestral strain neutralization (with a geometric mean ratio of 1.38 and a 95% confidence interval between 1.22 and 1.56). These trends were also observed in the age groups of 12-17 and 18-55 years.
